Packing tips #2

Written by: | Posted on: | Category:

Sunday, we will be leaving for Greece. Here are the answers to several questions I’ve received. It may be helpful.

When and where is the meeting place?

Our flight leaves at 10:20 AM from Terminal B. I would like everyone there around 8:00 AM. Please find me at the front counters near the center to check in. Do not go through TSA security until you’ve found me. That is important. Everyone should have my cell number. If not, email me and I’ll send it to you.

How much money will I spend?

For the trip as a whole, since everyone has different needs and goals for the trip, this one is a little hard to answer. I usually tell students to figure it out like this. The numbers below, by the way are very generous and total about 800 Dollars for the month.

Food = about 150 Euros (this is based on surveying past students. It’s an average and includes all non-program meals, snacks, eating out, etc.

Gifts (estimate) = 300 Euros (based on surveys)

Gifts for self = 200 Euros

Also, the big variables are adult beverages. I’d say about 100 euros.

So, final answer…about 800 should be fine.

Do we need to bring sheets, towels, etc.

No. I would say it’s a good idea to bring one bath towel for swimming, but definitely no to sheets, pillows, linens, etc.

Should we bring paper, pens, school supplies?

Yes, But I’d also recommend buying a Greek notebook and pen there. School supplies are very cheap (except Scotch-tape, for some reason–but you don’t need that) and it’s fun to see what students there use.

Your thoughts about the phone situation

It is important, very important, that I can reach everyone by texting. Most places have wifi, but it’s not at American standards, especially on the islands. Honestly, though, the cellular is a bit spotty as well. Personally, I get the international 10.00 dollar a day program from AT&T. Then, I don’t need to think about it. But that costs over 100.00 dollars. I need it as the director. As students, you can get away with minimal data, no phone and unlimited texting. That’s usually what I suggest.

Do we need any texts for the course?

No texts are required. All reading material is at www.anthonyhollingsworth.com. I would suggest downloading the following while in the States and putting it on your phone or Tablet: Selected Readings about Aristotle Plato’s Euthyphro Thucydides’ Melian Dialogue Question #7: Should I bring a computer?

No computer is necessary for the program. Unless you have a need, I’d leave it at home. iPads are fine, iPhones or smart phone is the tool of choice. You will have no need in the class to bring a computer.
